News Flash! Catching Up Won Third Place for Use of Negative Space at QuiltCon 2016!
I am so excited to announce that my original design “Catching Up” was selected by the QuiltCon jury of modern quilters to be exhibited at QuiltCon this year in Pasadena, California from February 18-21. QuiltCon is the Modern Quilt Con’s annual show. It is the only all modern quilt show in the US.This year there were over 1,800 quilts submitted for consideration to the Guild and 350 were selected to hang at the show. This is quite an honor
The inspiration for Catching Up flew right over my head. I was standing in the backyard when a flock of geese flew over the house in their signature V formation. I noticed one straggler, honking, desperately trying to catch up to the others and get into place. The fabric I chose for the quilt were various Cotton + Steel prints I had in my stash. The design uses combinations of 3 different motifs racing diagonally across the quilt top. The one lonely straggler in the upper left trying to fall in line with the others.
The entire background of the quilt is quilted in a subway tile pattern, reminiscent of a white brick building. The “geese” are quilted in a v pattern echoing the motifs.
The back of the quilt is also pieced in a solid gold fabric, also from Cotton + Steel, and scraps of the fabric used for the geese in 2 large bold stripes across the top and the bottom. The use of the solid fabric allows the quilting pattern to shine through on the back.
The pattern for this quilt also includes the directions for an alternate layout in a wallhanging crib size. Happy Sewing!!!
